英语课教案:No smoking, please!2

Teaching aims:
  1. To get some information about smoking in China and Britain from the text, and learn some useful expressions;
  2. To train the Ss’ ability of skimming to get the main idea of passage and scanning to get the detailed information.
  3. To get the Ss to know that smoking is harmful to one’s health, and it also pollutes the environment.
Teaching emphasis: Reading comprehension.

Teaching procedures:
Step 1 Revision
  Revise the dialogues in SB Lesson 5, get some pairs to recite the dialogue.
Step 2 Presentation
  Show a “No Smoking” sign, ask the following questions:
  What does this sign mean?
  Where can you find this sign?
  Why is smoking not allowed?
  Look at the picture on page 8, ask the following questions:
  What can you see in the picture?
  What does it mean?
Step 3 Skimming
  Ask the Ss to read the text as quickly as possible to see if these sentences are true:
  1) Chinese people smoke more than British people.
  2) In Britain more women smoke than men.
Step 4 Scanning
  Ask the Ss to read the text carefully and answer the following questions:
  1) How many people in China smoke at present?
  2) Are most of the smokers in China male or female?
  3) Why does cigarette smoking cost the Chinese government more money?
  4) How many packets of cigarettes are smoked each day by Chinese?
  5) What about the problem of cigarette smoking in Britain?
  6) In Britain there are more female smokers than male smokers, aren’t there?
  7) Are sales of cigarettes rising or falling? Why?
Step 5 Conclusion
  What is the main idea of the article?
  A. China produces one third of the world’s cigarettes.
  B. The Chinese government makes a lot of money from sales of tobacco every year.
  C. More women than men in Britain smoke cigarettes.
  D. Smoking cigarettes is bad for people’s health.

  Ask Ss: How many parts can this text be divided into?
(2 parts. Para1-3, the situation of smoking in China; Para 4-5, the situation of smoking in Britain.)
Step 6 Consolidation
  SB Page 9, Part 2.
  This exercise contains a reading passage with some words missing. The first letter of each missing word is given. The Ss are required to put in the missing words according to the context. Then check the answers with the whole class.
Step 7 Discussion
  Do you think smoking is a bad habit? If so, give some disadvantages; if not, give your reasons as well.
Step 8 Homework
  1) Read the text at least two times;
  2) Finish the exercises on WB.
